Chief Scout Dwayne Fields celebrated twenty remarkable young people with his Unsung Heroes Awards this year — Scouts chosen from hundreds of nominations across the UK for showing extraordinary kindness, bravery and selflessness in their communities. One of the twenty is Anastacia Jones, of Leagrave Scout Group.
On an Explorer Scout trip to Lake Oeschinensee in Switzerland, a fellow Scout lost consciousness in open water. Anastacia went straight to his aid and found that he was sinking beneath the surface.
She found him sinking, and pulled him to shore on her own.
Without hesitation she pulled him to shore single-handedly and began administering first aid, calmly directing the other Scouts around her, delegating tasks and making sure effective support was in place throughout. Her quick thinking, physical effort and decisive action undoubtedly saved his life — conduct showing courage, maturity and responsibility far beyond her years.
Anastacia was nominated by Jen Avis, who was her Young Leader Leader at the time. Both Jen and Leagrave Scout Group are enormously proud of her — and thanks are due to Kirsty Faraday, who managed to keep the news under her hat right up until the announcement.
Congratulations Anastacia. It is very well deserved.
