280 young people, one lake, six sessions a day

Pirate-themed sailing boats out on Stewartby Lake during the Water Activity Days

When Riparian Explorers and 1st Luton Sea Scouts join forces at Stewartby Lake, the result is a full-throttle weekend of paddling, sailing and rafting — and the launch of a hard-won new safety boat.

Across a bumper weekend of water activity days, Riparian Explorers and 1st Luton Sea Scouts welcomed 280 young people to Stewartby Lake for a programme packed with adventure — six sessions each day of kayaking, paddle boarding, bell boating, sailing, raft building and pirate ship sailing.

The weekend also marked a milestone: the first outing for Riparian’s new safety boat, Ginger — orange, of course. She is the sum of years of fundraising through these very activity days, and seeing her on the water made every bag-pack and every raffle worthwhile.

None of it happens without the leaders, helpers and instructors who give up their weekends to plan and run it. And as the lake settled back to a still, sunlit calm each evening, it was clear the effort was worth it.
