First Luton Sea Scout Group is the longest-running Scout troop in Luton, tracing its roots back to 1909 — starting life in a boy’s bedroom on Clarendon Road, later shaped into its present form by a merger of the old 1st, 2nd and 13th Luton troops — and the only troop in the town to keep running right through the First World War. As Sea Scouts since 1942 and Admiralty-recognised since 1943, an honour held by only around 100 troops nationally, it brings a genuine nautical edge to Scouting: a Royal Yachting Association training centre for sailing and powerboating, partnered with British Rowing and Paddle UK, with Royal Life Saving Society-qualified lifeguards on hand. It’s a brilliant choice for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in Luton who want adventure on the water as well as on land, meeting from Bowling Green Lane. Visit the group’s own website to find out more.
In the summer, sessions move onto the water at Luton Hoo — ask your section leader for the current term’s arrangements.
