Two birthdays, one district

A cake decorated for the Cub Scouts' 110th birthday

Two milestone celebrations, a fortnight apart, and a District that turned out in force for both — with tomahawks, bottle rockets, a rained-off campfire singsong, and two very good cakes.

Some birthdays are worth marking properly. This summer our District marked two: forty years of Beaver Scouts, and one hundred and ten years of Cub Scouts. Both were celebrated the way they should be — outdoors, together, and with a very good cake.

The Beavers went first. The whole District came together for an afternoon built around the things six- and seven-year-olds love most: glass painting, soft archery, crossbows, tomahawks, Tetris challenges and screaming balloons, with s’mores toasted to finish. The afternoon wound down with singing around the campfire — right up until the rain arrived and moved everybody indoors, where the celebration carried on and the cake was very much deserved.

A week later it was the Cubs’ turn, and 110 years called for a full programme. Cubs took on archery, caving, bottle rockets, circus skills, Tetris teamwork challenges and backwoods cooking — a proper mix of adventure, teamwork, creativity and outdoor skills, with plenty of badge progress picked up along the way. The cake, once again, went down a treat.

What both days had in common was the number of happy faces, and the number of volunteers working quietly behind the scenes to put them on. Particular thanks go to Nicky Taylor at Flitwick Scouts and to everyone who gave up their time to make these celebrations happen.
